Mission
Every school’s Parent Teacher Association helps parents become involved in their children’s education, share ideas, and enrich their school communities. At PS 705, our PTA is focused on building community and creating a strong network of families. We enjoy spending time together, and are committed to supporting our wonderful administration as we work together to grow our school. Remember that by having a child at PS 705, you are automatically a member of our PTA, and your vote counts! Please come to our general membership meetings and feel free to reach out to the executive board at 705eboard2023-2024@
Committees
- Communications – works to grow and mobilize parent volunteers to address teacher’s project needs, assist in developing and improving the school’s website, collaborate with the parent coordinator to manage vendors, and continuously assess new methods to improve the school’s internal and external-facing communications to the community.
- Events & Creative – is in charge of initiating, producing and staffing the various PTA sponsored events throughout the school year. Each event serves as an opportunity for intergenerational connection and community building amongst students, parents, staff, teachers and administrators and represents the heart of the PTA’s mandate. PS 705 is a unique and diverse community and our events — from movie nights to the fall and summer festivals — serve as opportunities for us to celebrate and support one another.
- Fund Raising & Grant Writing – provides the school with the resources to raise funds efficiently and effectively while creating transparency and accountability in our fundraising efforts.
- Diversity & Title 1 – oversees efforts to maintain and support our diverse community. Our population represents a unique and rich mix of racial, ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. The Committee works hard to ensure that their various needs are met. They also work with the administration to oversee the allocation of Title 1 funding. Title 1 offers assistance to schools with high percentages of children from low-income families. Funding can be used to provide additional academic support and learning opportunities to master curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects. For example, funds support extra instruction in reading and mathematics as well as special preschool, after-school and summer programs to extend and reinforce the regular school curriculum.
- Staff Support – is made up of the designated “class parents” from each class and/or grade; parents who provide committed support to our hard-working specials teachers; and other parents who want to support, celebrate, and show our appreciation for our awesome staff. We will work together to see that every educator in the building gets the parental support, volunteer support, and supplies needed to be successful this school year, as well as organize meals for teachers during conferences and other events, and plan Teacher Appreciation Week each spring.
- The After-School Programs Committee – oversees the coordination of onsite and offsite after school programs at PS 705. They assess new programs and whether they will work well for our community. They also serves as a liaison between these parents and the programs’ administrators, expressing concerns, suggestions and praise for their efforts.
About Our Diversity Initiative
PS 705 is proud to be diverse and proud to be part of a pilot program designed to help us preserve our diversity. It’s a shameful fact that New York City public schools are among the most segregated in the nation.
We value our diversity because we value equity, because we know it makes our kids smarter, and because it makes our days more interesting, more inspiring, and more fun.
School Leadership Team
The School Leadership Team (SLT) is responsible for developing the Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP). This entails setting academic and community goals, assessing school needs, and aligning the use of building resources to these needs. Parents make up half of the membership; the rest is comprised of teachers and administrators, including PTA and UFT representation.
